Zabrze celebrated Democracy Week in Norway

The Municipality of Kristiansand organized another Democracy Week together with numerous local, regional and international partners. The event took place between 2nd and 8th May.

The first Democracy Week was organized in 2022, it is to be an annual event of the first week of May. The Municipality of Kristiansand, in collaboration with the European Council, Local and Regional Governments Association (KS) and local partners, is responsible for the main Democracy Week program. The purpose of the event is to facilitate the meetings and talks that contribute to the consolidation of human rights, free speech and democracy. The format of the main program is international.

The creation of the Democracy Week has been exciting from the very beginning. Throughout the May days we would like to remind you about democracy and human rights applicable in our everyday life. Under the auspices of the Democracy Week almost 30 events took place this year and we hope that lots of our inhabitants had an opportunity to participate in them – commented Jan Oddvar Skisland, the Mayor of Kristiansand.

On the 5th May, the Europe Day, the European Conference on Democracy and Human Rights in Europe was held for the fourth year running. This was the biggest event of the Democracy Week. The representatives of Zabrze local government at the conference were Małgorzata Giela, the City Secretary and Grażyna Szczepańska-Wabnic, the Manager of the Project Performance Department of the City Office in Zabrze.

Free speech is an important topic of the conference. Year by year does the conference gathers the representatives of politics, local governments as well as people from the world of culture and activists.
